Because we’re so cutting edge…

We finally have email! Since we’re as paranoid as Dale Gribble, we’ve never given away our everyday email addresses. So, as an anniversary gift to ourselves, we got sector930.com email addresses. If you would like to get in touch with any member of Sector 930 and let him know the amount of your medical bills from gouging your eyes out after reading his post, please use one of the follow addresses:

  • charlie@sector930.com
  • edwin@sector930.com
  • joe@sector930.com
  • joel@sector930.com
  • sam@sector930.com

Another option is to tell us how Sector 930 brings joy to you and your family. Here is a projected breakdown of the types of emails we will get:

So maybe this time I’ll learn…

If there’s anybody out there reading this (yeah, right) who has worked with WordPress before probably knows about permalinks. They’re those handly little URLs that look like “http://www.sector930.com/01/01/foo-bar” instead of “http://www.sector930.com/?p=666″. We gave permalinks a shot a little while ago, but we noticed it was breaking all the links to individual articles. So we put it on the backburner for a while.

Today I decided to give it another go. The steps involved look something like this:

  1. Ensure mod_rewrite Apache module is installed
  2. Enable FollowSymLinks in httpd.conf
  3. Put AllowOverride FileInfo in httpd.conf

Sector930 Is Now Global!

We recently set up an account with Google Analytics here at Sector930. (That’s right, readers. We’ve got an eye on you.) I was perusing the reports this fine evening, looking at traffic sources and bounce rates.

One of the more interesting features is a map that shows you where on Earth traffic is coming from. I noticed that we got a hit from Tunis, Tunisia. This person from Tunisia landed on our site by doing a search for “the more you know the more you dare.”

Welcome to the new sector930.com

Well, we decided to make the move. Edwin’s host checking thingy was telling us that our hold hosting service, Bluehost, kept going down during the day. My RootBSD server, on the other hand, had excellent uptime. So after the email equivalent of a huddle, we agreed: adios Bluehost.

I had written a good post in anticipation of our easy transition and great success. Alas, that was not to be. I jumped the gun with changing the DNS, and Joe couldn’t export the old blog. So we all learned some lessons from the experience.

  1. Backup your shit before you do ANYTHING.

A 20-Post Celebration

It’s been almost a month since Sector 930 was launched and we’re now up to 20 posts, an impressive accomplishment.

I just upgraded the blog to WordPress 2.6.1, and all went swimmingly.  I’m hoping everyone *cough* CHARLIE *cough* takes advantage of the new Flickr photo gallery plugin, which allows a summary of photos from a Flickr album to show up RIGHT IN THE BLOG!  Charlie has been posting his images of his road trip to his Flickr account, and it’d be great to have the site jazzed up a little bit more.
